What are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is a surgical component that acts as an artificial tooth root, usually made of titanium, and is implanted in the jawbone to support a dental prosthesis like a crown or a bridge. Over time, the implant integrates with the surrounding bone which provides stability and durability. They are made up of three parts:
- The screw, which is inserted into the jawbone,
- The abutment, which is a small connector between the root and the crown,
- The crown, which is the visible part on top of the implant and it is a functional replacement tooth.
If you lack sufficient bone density for dental implants, two possible options are bone grafting and sinus lifting operations. Bone grafting is the process of transplanting bone material to augment the jawbone, whereas a sinus lift elevates the sinus membrane (a thin tissue layer that separates the sinus from the oral cavity) allowing bone graft material to be inserted to provide a more supportive foundation for the implant.
